Please read the following important information about updating the
ROM on the HP iPAQ hw6500 series.

This is a ROM update that contains fixes in the ROM as well as
updated versions of Bluetooth and GSM Firmware.
Please monitor the Support and Drivers section of the HP website
for future ROM or Software updates for this product.

1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
***************************

* A host PC running Microsoft Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000,
  or Windows XP.

* Microsoft ActiveSync v3.8 or later version installed on the
  host PC. The latest version of Microsoft ActiveSync is available
  for download on the Microsoft web site.
 
* An HP iPAQ hw6500 series

* A direct USB connection between the host PC and the HP iPAQ.

2.  IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT HP ROM UPDATE UTILITY
*******************************************************

***CAUTION***
  The ROM Update Utility is designed to erase and replace the 
  current ROM image and any existing ActiveSync partnerships
  including all user data and programs on the HP iPAQ and in the
  iPAQ File Store. HP recommends that users perform a backup of
  their personal data using Microsoft Activesync or iPAQ Backup
  before proceeding with the ROM update. This is only as a
  precautionary measure and should not be used after a successful
  ROM update.

  (NOTE)
  HP recommends that Backups made on a HP iPAQ ROM should only
  be installed on a HP iPAQ with the same model and ROM version
  number from which the backup was created. Installing old Backups
  onto ROM versions the Backup was not created on may interfere
  with the operation of the new ROM causing it to become unstable.  
 
* To save personal data for later use, copy it from the HP iPAQ
  (including from the iPAQ File Store) to the host PC or a storage
  card using ActiveSync Explore or iPAQ Backup.

* Users who do not customarily synchronize personal data using
  Microsoft Outlook ('stand-alone' users) should install Microsoft
  Outlook on their host PC and synchronize their personal data. The
  personal data can be transferred back to the HP iPAQ  after
  the ROM update has been completed and a partnership between the host
  PC and the HP iPAQ has been established.

* Remove any accessories from the HP iPAQ prior to updating the ROM.
  These may interfere with the update process.

* After the Update, ActiveSync 3.8 or later versions will prompt to
  establish a new partnership in order to synchronize the HP iPAQ
  with the host PC.  Previously established  ActiveSync partnerships
  will be unusable. Once a new partnership has been established,
  programs and personal data may be re-loaded through Add/Remove
  Programs from the Tools menu in ActiveSync or by using the Mobile
  Device Explorer. Refer to the Reference Guide on the Companion CD
  for more information on performing this task.

* If the Update Utility generates an error, follow the instructions
  on the host PC抯 screen to resolve the error.  Never perform a
  Full Reset (hard reset) unless explicitly instructed to do so.

3. KNOWN ISSUES AND WORKAROUNDS
*******************************

* Downloading and extracting the Softpaq files to the root directory
  (C:\) may cause an error. To correct this problem, simply specify
  a location other than C:\ or choose one of the default locations. 

* If your Host PC is running the Windows 98SE or Windows ME and the
  ROM Update Process is interrupted, you may have to reboot your Host PC.

* After the Update is complete, two ActiveSync icons may appear in the
  host PC抯 system tray. Move the mouse cursor over the icons to make
  the false icon disappear.

* Connecting the HP iPAQ to the host PC through a USB hub can
  result in a communication error. Please connect the HP iPAQ
  directly to an available USB port on the host PC.

* Use a direct USB connection to perform the ROM update. Any other
  connection type may cause the Update to fail.
